A New Haven ShelterAs a shelter that serves homeless families exclusively, The Haven is forced to turn away the many adults unaccompanied by children that come to us for shelter. In the last four years, a total of 885 adults (315 single women, 304 single men, and 113 couples) have contacted The Haven for shelter. Currently, there is no comprehensive solution for these individuals.
To meet this need within our community, The Haven is planning to build a new adult shelter in the Upper Valley. We have already secured a generous pledge from long-time Haven supporters, Mark and Rebecca Byrne, for half the cost of construction of the building up to $750,000.
“We are supporting the adult shelter project for the Upper Valley because the prosperity of the region in general can cause some people to be forgotten. A community as wise and fortunate as ours should not let that happen.”
—Mark and Rebecca Byrne
In December 2006, the Lebanon Zoning Board, by a vote of 3 to 2, denied The Haven’s application to build and operate this shelter at 74 Mechanic Street in Lebanon. While we were disappointed, we are moving ahead with our goal of establishing this much needed facility in the Upper Valley. We currently have an application in to the town of Hartford, Vermont with a plan to build the adult shelter next door to our current facility at 713 Hartford Avenue.
